I’ll admit, I watched Xion’s death scene before I played Days and I though it was sad, but that last line that Roxas said to her really bugged me, out of context, without knowing what ice cream meant to him, it killed the scene for me. But know that I played through the game, it made it that much sadder.

Roxas is like a child, he does not know the ways of the world and puts things together based on his surroundings, to him, ice cream is the most important thing in the world to him. Every day he goes to the top of the clock tower to eat ice cream after work. Why? Because Axel took him there at the after his first mission and he enjoyed it, it became his comfort zone. He flocked there for a sense of comfort and normality.

Roxas didn’t know the meaning of things like “love’ or “friendship”, he was a completely blank slate, he learned these things through his interactions with Axel and Xion and what Axel told him during their conversations. One of Roxas more profound lines of his early life was “So friends are people who eat ice cream together?” And Axel told him that was pretty much it. So that’s what friendship was to Roxas, sitting on the top of the clock tower and eating ice cream, he equated ice cream to friendship.

Roxas had one possession in his life, the winner stick. He was waiting to get two of them so he could share them with his friends, so he could have ice cream with his companions. In the end Roxas ended up leaving the organization and his one possession behind, he gave the winner stick to Axel because it was for him all along. He didn’t know where Xion was so he gave what he equated to friendship to the one friend he had left. Even after their falling out, he gave it to him because it was meant for him all along.

After he left he went to the clock tower to reflect on things, he went to the place he equated to comfort and happiness. There he met Xion and confronted her for the last time, and after he defeated her came the infamous death scene.

Roxas held Xion in his arms, his memory of her already beginning to falter, and as she begins to crystallize and disappear all that Roxas has to say is “Who will I eat ice cream with?”

Roxas didn’t know how to express his feelings of friendship, but he did know the meaning. The closest thing he could come up with was ice cream, because that is what he learned friendship was. When he said that to Xion he did the best that he could, he was devastated at the loss of his friend. It’s not that he forgot Axel, it’s that he wanted to know what he would do without his best friend, he wanted to know how he would make it.

He was absolutely torn and all he could come  up with was a cheesy line about ice cream, but to Roxas, ice cream is the most important thing in the world. It’s what held together everything that was important to him.
